Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic to the United Nations
East 83rd Street,
New York, New York
8 story building renovation

When the newly formed Czech Republic began a program of updating its foreign ministry buildings, one of the first was their permanent mission to the United Nations. Fenimore Rosenberg Kolb was selected as the architectural and interior design firm for the renovation of the 40,000 square foot building at Madison Avenue and 83rd Street.

The project was divided into three phases: the public spaces and meeting rooms on the first three floors, with an apartment for the deputy ambassador on the eighth floor; the general upgrade of building systems and code compliance issues; and lastly the renovation of residential rooms and guest suites on the fourth through eighth floors.

The new design was intended to reflect the goals of a fledgling democracy breaking away from a traditional past. A flexible, open plan was provided with transparent/translucent movable wall dividers. The design is classically modern and minimal while respecting key elements of the traditional exterior.
